Background of the Study

Neonatal tetanus (NNT) remains a significant cause of infant mortality in many developing countries, including Nigeria. Neonatal tetanus is a preventable disease, yet it continues to be a leading cause of death in neonates in regions with inadequate access to maternal and neonatal care, especially in rural areas like Jigawa State. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), neonatal tetanus is caused by the contamination of a newborn’s umbilical cord stump with tetanus spores, often due to unsterile delivery practices or inadequate neonatal care (WHO, 2024).

In Jigawa State, where access to healthcare is often limited by socio-economic barriers, a high percentage of deliveries occur in non-hospital settings, increasing the risk of neonatal tetanus (Adeyemi & Abdulsalam, 2023). Pediatric nurses play a vital role in preventing neonatal tetanus through the promotion of safe delivery practices, immunization education, and the proper care of newborns immediately after birth. These nurses are crucial in rural areas where they may be the first point of contact for mothers and babies. Their involvement in health education, immunization campaigns, and providing postpartum care can directly influence the reduction of neonatal tetanus cases.

Statement of the Problem

Neonatal tetanus remains a major public health issue in Jigawa State, despite the availability of vaccines and preventive measures. There is limited research on the specific role pediatric nurses play in reducing NNT in this region. Understanding their contributions, challenges, and strategies is critical for developing targeted interventions to eliminate NNT in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of pediatric nurses in preventing neonatal tetanus in Jigawa State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of pediatric nursing interventions in reducing neonatal tetanus cases.
  3. To identify barriers faced by pediatric nurses in the implementation of neonatal tetanus prevention strategies.

Research Questions

  1. What role do pediatric nurses play in preventing neonatal tetanus in Jigawa State?
  2. How effective are pediatric nursing interventions in reducing neonatal tetanus cases in Jigawa State?
  3. What challenges do pediatric nurses face in preventing neonatal tetanus in Jigawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric nursing interventions significantly reduce the incidence of neonatal tetanus in Jigawa State.
  2. Barriers such as inadequate training and lack of resources hinder the effectiveness of pediatric nurses in preventing neonatal tetanus.
  3. Community awareness and vaccination campaigns increase the success of neonatal tetanus prevention efforts.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric nurses in Jigawa State, particularly those involved in maternal and child health services. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with healthcare providers, and an analysis of health records. Limitations include possible access difficulties in remote regions and variability in healthcare facilities across the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neonatal Tetanus (NNT): A preventable disease caused by the infection of a newborn’s umbilical cord stump with Clostridium tetani spores, leading to life-threatening symptoms.
  • Pediatric Nurses: Nurses specializing in the care of infants and children, particularly in neonatal and postnatal care settings.
  • Health Education: Activities aimed at improving the health knowledge and behaviors of the community, particularly related to preventing disease and improving healthcare practices.
